Picture this: A farmer rises before dawn, hopeful for the day’s work—only to find his crops, his family’s lifeline, trampled overnight. The damage is devastating. Nearby, an elephant, driven by hunger and shrinking habitat, has wandered into farmland, unaware that its search for food is fueling a growing conflict.
In Tanzania, human-elephant conflict (HEC) is intensifying. As farmland expands and charcoal production encroaches on wildlife corridors, elephants are forced off their natural paths. Farmers, relying on small-scale agriculture, can lose over half their harvest in a single season, deepening tensions between conservation efforts and local communities.
But what if we could change the story?
By combining traditional knowledge, community-driven monitoring, and cutting-edge technology, we can turn conflict into coexistence. Our solution? A multi-layered approach that empowers farmers with the tools they need to stay ahead.
🔹 Camera traps allow farmers to track elephant movements, helping them understand the routes elephants prefer and the factors that attract them. With this knowledge, they can make informed decisions about where to plant, what to plant, and when to plant, reducing the chances of conflict.
🔹 An AI-powered alert system, currently in testing, will take this a step further—connecting directly to farmers’ mobile phones. When elephants are detected nearby, real-time alerts will give them a chance to take action before any damage occurs. Authorities will also be notified, enabling rapid response and ensuring elephants are safely guided back to their natural paths.
Many farmers don’t realize elephants have entered their fields until it’s too late. With these tools, they can predict rather than react, shifting from uncertainty to preparedness.
This isn’t just about preventing losses; it’s about building a future where both people and elephants thrive. By aligning conservation with local needs, we can foster coexistence, turning a long-standing conflict into a shared success story.
The time to act is now. Join us in transforming human-elephant conflict into human-elephant coexistence. Together, we can protect Tanzania’s rich biodiversity and the communities that call it home, securing a sustainable future for generations to come.
