Heike Perko-Board Chairman

Heike Perko was born in Germany and moved to the United States at the age of 17. She holds a Bachelor of Science in Biological Sciences and a Master of Science in Science Education.
She resides in Athens, Ohio, on a 40-acre farm where principles of sustainable land use and environmental stewardship are actively practiced. The farm supports small-scale livestock production, horse boarding and training, and nature-based experiences for visitors.
Heike serves as a Middle School Science Teacher at Trimble Local Schools, where she is dedicated to advancing environmental literacy and fostering scientific curiosity among young learners. She is a strong advocate for experiential, place-based environmental education and supports initiatives that equip communities and children with the knowledge and skills needed to care for natural resources.
A defining chapter in her conservation journey was living and working in Alaska, where she participated in the observation and study of Northern Fur Seals and Steller Sea Lions. This experience deepened her commitment to wildlife conservation and science-based education.
As Board Chair of the ECOWICE Foundation, Heike provides strategic leadership, educational expertise, and a steadfast commitment to conservation and environmental education initiatives that strengthen communities and promote coexistence with wildlife. She is particularly interested in supporting programs that inspire the next generation of environmental stewards. Heike looks forward to visiting Tanzania to engage directly with ECOWICE’s work and the communities it serves.
