Help Farmers and Elephants Share the Land in Harmony

In Tanzania’s rural villages, a single elephant visit can mean the loss of an entire season’s harvest. ECOWICE’s Community Wildlife Monitoring Program empowers farmers to track elephant movements, identify safe farming zones, and protect both people and wildlife.

A farmer rises before dawn, ready for the day’s work, only to find his crops, the family’s food and incom, destroyed overnight. Nearby, a hungry elephant has wandered into the farm, driven by shrinking forests and lost migration routes.

This story is becoming common in Tanzania. But through ECOWICE, farmers are finding a better way ,  coexistence.

We train farmers to record elephant movements using phones and notebooks. These local “Wildlife Guardians” collect data that helps the community decide where to plant crops safely, where to build, and which zones to conserve for elephant movement.

Since starting this project:

  • 145 elephant visits have been recorded

  • 94 visits caused no crop damage

  • 162 hectares identified as elephant “hotspots” for conservation
